Training & development

Staff training at Fairview Care & Support starts with a full induction into the company, staff are provided with an employee handbook and a set of policies to read and sign. As a management team, we understand the need to embed the policies throughout the team, we do this by providing a set of questions based on each policy so their level of understanding of any policy is evident.

Our staff will be provided with a personal training journal, with expected completion after every face-to-face training session they attend. Face-to-face training is mandatory and covers all core subjects and issues. We also provide online training, covering all mandatory subjects and issues relevant to news and media. We also provide training based on the needs of our young people so staff can better understand and support them.

The training journal includes a skills audit and a SWOT analysis that our staff complete on an annual basis. This shows that staff can identify their strengths and any areas that need improvement. We know the importance of placing staff where their strengths lie, however, we also know that to learn new skills, we have to push ourselves out of our comfort zones. Skill audits will be used and discussed during annual appraisals with staff and their line managers respectively, and will cover subjects such as time management, organisational skills, and interpersonal skills.

Supervision

Our management team recognise that staff supervision is essential and is to be completed on a six-weekly basis. To identify any specific training needs, supervisions are used as a platform for staff to bring forward any issues they would like to raise. This could be anything from issues that may affect young people, the fabric of the home, the support that we provide, health and safety, safeguarding, and reflective practice.

Quality assurance

We understand the need for self-regulation and quality assurance, especially through consultation with staff, young people, and providers of external support, so we regularly ask for feedback from all and use this to improve our services.

We monitor the support aspect of how we work through ongoing auditing and internal quality assurance visits at least twice a year.

Our senior management team carries out audits on all our homes twice a year. The initial audit is to ensure all documents are correctly in place and are being used at full potential, the team for each home is then provided with a chart and report for how their home has been achieved. The second audit, also carried out by senior management is to inspect the quality and content of documents recorded by the staff team, for example, have they evidenced all the work and support they have completed with the young people.

Identifying your learning development needs

A SWOT matrix is a framework for analysing your strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. More specifically, it helps you focus on your strengths, improve your weaknesses, take advantage of opportunities and eliminate threats that may impede your ability to progress. Finally, it separates you from your peers, further developing the skills and abilities you require to advance your career.

Knowledge and skills analysis

Analysing your knowledge and skills can assist in identifying areas where they may be lacking or require improvement; helping to select the most appropriate training to build individual abilities in the right areas. It can also be useful in developing your road map, helping you become the best you can be in your current role, or indicating what knowledge/skills you need to advance your career in your chosen direction.
